Position Overview:
The Senior Project Manager is responsible for proactively leading the planning, execution, and delivery of educational content (digital and print) and technology projects for Six Red Marbles.
This customer-facing role is responsible for project execution, strategy, and strategic customer communication, with minimal oversight from the Sr. Project Director and VP, PMO. The Senior Project Manager will act as the main point of contact for the client’s project team, ensuring that communications are clear and timely, and that all aspects of the project are delivered on time, on budget, and to the highest standard of quality. They are responsible for managing and collaborating with project team members (Six Red Marbles employees, contractors, and vendors) to develop project workflows, schedules, and resource plans; planning and allocating resources in the project plan; and maintaining a cooperative, motivated, and successful team.
In addition, this role will operate in a Program Manager capacity for large-scale and complex engagements, overseeing multiple interconnected projects, aligning cross-project dependencies, and ensuring delivery against broader strategic objectives.
Additionally, they will serve as a role model to their colleagues in the PMO and will be expected to assist with training and mentoring team members.
Specific duties, activities, and responsibilities:
Project Planning
- Lead the design, planning, and implementation of detailed project plans throughout the project life cycle, both with the internal SRM team and with the client’s project team
- Oversee and coordinate multiple related projects within large-scale programs, ensuring alignment of timelines, deliverables, and strategic goals across workstreams
- Drive resource planning for internal staff and freelancers, utilizing project management tools to model workflows that balance client schedule needs with staff and freelancer capacity
- Collaborate with the functional leads from learning experience design, editorial, and production
- Create project documentation in collaboration with functional leads and own documentation maintenance and updates throughout project life cycle
- Follow defined project management methodology
- Utilize defined project management tools to set up and manage the project
Resource Management
- Collaborate, coordinate internal staff, and manage freelancers, consultants, or vendors
- Balance and optimize resources across multiple projects within a program to ensure efficiency and successful delivery at scale
- Work internally to confirm level of effort is accurate and maintained in project plans
- Communicate project utilization metrics to project team members and track and report hours and expenses charged against the project budget
- Actively manage project resources, including delivery of assignments and mitigating late deliveries
- Work with procurement and finance to maintain external contracts and purchase orders; monitor and track freelance/vendor resource costs against purchase orders
Budgeting, Forecasting, and Reporting
- Maintain the project budget using SRM’s project management tools
- Oversee financial performance across multiple projects within a program, including consolidated forecasting and budget tracking
- Regularly review and update data in SRM’s financial system of record (Sage Intacct)
- Track project hours and expenses against project budget, including forecasting remaining project hours and expenses; collaborate with leads to prevent and mitigate overages
Leadership and Communication
- Serve as the primary contact for day-to-day project communication
- Provide program-level visibility to stakeholders, synthesizing status, risks, and performance across multiple projects
- Anticipate risks and scope changes, collaborate with the team to troubleshoot, escalate, and resolve issues
- Manage cross-project risks, dependencies, and escalations to ensure alignment and successful delivery of large-scale initiatives
- Proactively lead project team members across all functional areas
- Communicate project status, and provide reporting to key stakeholders on metrics and KPIs
- Hold internal and client status meetings, set meeting agenda, and document minutes
- Act as a mentor and trainer for members of the PMO team
Desired Skills and Knowledge
- Must be well-organized, detail-oriented, and highly analytical and possess strong problem-solving skills; able to manage multiple projects simultaneously and independently
- Must thrive in a fast-paced, changing environment
- Next-level customer management and interpersonal/communications skills; demonstrated history of employing skills across all levels, internally and with clients
- Strong business acumen with specific attention to project financials, metrics, and KPIs
- Proven success at overseeing large, complex, and particularly challenging projects and clients
- Experience managing large-scale programs or portfolios of related projects, including cross-functional coordination and dependency management, strongly preferred
- Experience with Wrike preferred
- Knowledge of education (preK–12 or higher ed), the publishing industry, and/or professional services organizations required
- 4+ years of budgeting, forecasting, and overall financial management experience required
- 4+ years of project management experience required, including 2+ years of client-facing experience
- 4+ years of program management experience required, including 2+ years of client-facing experience.
