This individual works closely with the CDI team, Coding, Compliance, and Medical Staff leadership to drive a culture of documentation excellence.
Operating Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and deliver education programs focused on clinical documentation integrity (CDI) principles for physicians, APPs, nursing staff, and other clinical personnel.
- Conduct individual and group education sessions — including onboarding, ongoing training, and targeted remediation — both in-person and via virtual platforms.
- Collaborate with CDI specialists and coding staff to identify documentation deficiencies, trends, and educational opportunities.
- Create and maintain educational materials including presentations, tip sheets, case studies, e-learning modules, and reference guides aligned with current coding guidelines (ICD-10-CM/PCS, MS-DRG, HCC).
- Partner with Medical Staff leadership and department chairs to integrate documentation education into physician orientation and ongoing professional development.
- Monitor the effectiveness of educational interventions through key metrics and adjust programs accordingly.
- Serve as a subject matter expert and resource for clinical staff on documentation standards, regulatory requirements, and payer-specific guidelines.
- Support preparation and facilitation of CDI and coding-related audits; assist with response plans and corrective action education.
- Stay current with changes in coding guidelines, CMS regulations, clinical documentation standards, and industry best practices; disseminate updates to relevant stakeholders.
- Participate in interdisciplinary committees and workgroups related to documentation, quality, and revenue integrity as assigned.
- In-depth knowledge of clinical documentation integrity principles, ICD-10-CM/PCS coding, DRG methodology (MS-DRG and APR-DRG), and HCC risk adjustment.
- Demonstrated ability to design and deliver adult learning programs for diverse clinical audiences, including physicians and advanced practice providers.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret CDI and coding data, identify trends, and develop targeted educational interventions.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to translate complex clinical and coding concepts into accessible, actionable education.
- Proficiency with electronic health record (EHR) systems.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams) and e-learning authoring tools (e.g., Articulate) preferred.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, matrixed environment with multiple stakeholders.
- Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management, Nursing, or a related clinical or health sciences field required
- Professional Coding Certification such as CPC, CCS, CCS-P, or CRC would be a plus
- Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in clinical documentation integrity, health information management, or clinical coding, with at least 1–2 years in an education or training capacity.
- Up to 15% local and national travel may be required for this role, including site visits, conferences, and training events.
